ABOUT US
WHO WE ARE
The Association of Korean American Medical Graduates IS
an organization comprised of over 150 medical doctors representing primary care to the gamut of tertiary specialty care in the North Eastern part of the USA.
As a community-driven organization first, AKAM has mobilized its physician membership to organize and provide care at local health fairs promoting wellness and disease management in underserved Korean communities.
Our organization gives health awareness seminars and financially supports local charitable organizations geared towards promoting the health of underserved populations.
As a secondary but equally important mission, AKAM nurtures an upcoming cadre of Korean-American physicians through mentorship of pre-medical and medical students and the awarding of scholarships to medical students, residents, and related research.
Through these activities, we serve our broader communities at need and foster a new generation of physicians who will continue such service.
PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS
Founder of AKAM, Jeffrey M. Ahn
President (1996)
Interim Co-President (Current)
Welcome to AKAM!
It is hard to believe that almost thirty years have passed since we first gathered at Korea Palace restaurant on Park Avenue to start our organization in 1995. At the time, the majority of Korean physicians in US were first-generation physicians who had graduated from medical schools in Korea. Those who received their medical degrees in the US were in the minority and lacked an alumni association to represent them at the national level. So AKAM was originally started as a regional
organization to represent Korean American physicians in the North East who had graduated from US medical schools.
Since then, we have come a long way. US graduates have become the majority, and now our organization represents all physicians with Korean heritage, regardless of where they received their medical degree.
Over the past thirty years, AKAM has been led by thirteen great presidents who have represented Korean American physicians from the North East at both the national and international levels, promoting friendship among physicians as well as contributing to the local community through annual free health fairs with local hospitals; medical school application seminars for high school and undergraduate students; research scholarships for medical students; and mentorship for residents.
I sincerely hope that, in future, AKAM will continue helping all Korean American physicians in the North East to network among themselves, assist the younger physcians (including those who graduated from Korean medical schools) in their postgraduate training, and further help the local Korean American community with all aspects of its healthcare needs. Welcome to AKAM!
President, Gerald J. Lee
